Types of Bystanders [1]

This is a quick post about the Types of Bystanders.  I’ll definitely revisit this post in the future – but I wanted to get a few quick thoughts out about it now.

  • Instigating Bystander – sets up actions of aggressor; initiator, creates situation
  • Manipulating Bystander – influence aggressor actions, takes advantage of the situation
  • Collaborating Bystander – Actively joins in, assists aggressor
  • Facilitating Bystander – Provides audience (fine line to joining in), can be inadvertent
  • Abdicating Bystander – in position to help; allows situation to continue by doing nothing
  • Avoiding Bystander – walks away
  • Intervening Bystander – takes action to intervene or prevent retaliation
  • Defusing Bystander – involves themselves in preventing escalation of the situation
  • Defending Bystander – stands up for victim
  • Empathizing Bystander – identifies with the victim – says/does nothing
  • Sympathizing Bystander – identifies with, fear of becoming target, supports in private
  • Succumbing Bystander – becomes fellow victim

Submitting Bystander – becomes substitute victim
