Generation Z and The American Workforce in 2030

Inter-Cultural Skills

Generation Z is quickly rising to lead organizations throughout the country – is yours organization ready?

#Workforce2030

Recently, I facilitated a strategic planning session for a Chamber of Commerce. After playing a short video, I asked them to envision the year 2030 and what their market would look like in 11 years. Remember, they are a chamber of commerce – their market is businesses. Equally important to the type of business is, the people who are running them.

After asking them this question, I asked them to share their thoughts using a standard FACTS and ASSUMPTIONS chart. With this chart model we are able to separate from what we think we know from what we can prove.

I put this slide up just before they began their small group and reminded them that in 11 years, the Millennials that many people worry about today will be nearing retirement age and Alphas, a generation not yet in main stream discussion will be heading off to college.

Generation Z (1997 – 2010)

It will be the children of Generation Z who will be running the day to day and front line operations of most companies. Generation Z, is the largest generation in American history, comprising 27% of the US population.
They are also the most ethnically-diverse generation.

I’ll probably come back and expand on this post in the near future but really wanted to share a few thoughts about the reality and some of the misinterpretations of generations in the workforce. It’s time to start thinking about the generations after the millennials.
