This is a quick post about the Types of Bystanders. I’ll definitely revisit this post in the future – but I wanted to get a few quick thoughts out about it now.
- Instigating Bystander – sets up actions of aggressor; initiator, creates situation
- Manipulating Bystander – influence aggressor actions, takes advantage of the situation
- Collaborating Bystander – Actively joins in, assists aggressor
- Facilitating Bystander – Provides audience (fine line to joining in), can be inadvertent
- Abdicating Bystander – in position to help; allows situation to continue by doing nothing
- Avoiding Bystander – walks away
- Intervening Bystander – takes action to intervene or prevent retaliation
- Defusing Bystander – involves themselves in preventing escalation of the situation
- Defending Bystander – stands up for victim
- Empathizing Bystander – identifies with the victim – says/does nothing
- Sympathizing Bystander – identifies with, fear of becoming target, supports in private
- Succumbing Bystander – becomes fellow victim
Submitting Bystander – becomes substitute victim
